The Pixel Watch 5 has the potential to be a game-changer in the smartwatch industry, but it's not without its flaws. While the upcoming model is expected to feature a faster charging system, the proprietary charging mechanism remains a significant issue. In my opinion, the lack of a universal charging standard is a major drawback, and it's high time Google takes a leaf out of Apple's book. The Apple Watch has consistently used the same charging technology for over a decade, and it's time for Android smartwatches to follow suit. Personally, I think Google should adopt Qi2 charging for the Pixel Watch 5, offering both pin-based and wireless charging options. This would not only provide more flexibility for users but also encourage other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to adopt a more universal charging standard. The current situation is a charger purgatory, with multiple charging systems and limited accessory options. The Pixel Watch 4's charging system, for instance, requires users to purchase additional docks for work or travel, and the fast-charging capability is not guaranteed with all power sources. The pricing and availability of Pixel Watch accessories are also a concern, with limited options and high costs. The Android smartwatch ecosystem deserves better, and the Pixel Watch 5 has the opportunity to lead the way. By adopting a more universal charging standard, Google can improve the user experience and encourage innovation in the accessory market. In my view, the Pixel Watch 5 could be near-perfect if it offers both pin-based and wireless charging options, setting a new standard for Android smartwatches.
